Complete refurbishment of a house in Margenat Street
For a couple with a child
Needs
Oriol inherited this flat in his grandparents’ old house, near Bonanova in Barcelona, and it was immediately clear to him that it was an opportunity to settle here with his partner and daughter, although the poor state of repair of the property and its compartmentalized layout required major changes to adapt it to his current lifestyle.
Project challenge
The house had cavity walls, old and precarious carpentry and a very compartmentalized layout with partition walls. In addition, Oriol wanted his house to be truly comfortable, very energy efficient and practical for the family’s day-to-day life.
Solution
For all these reasons, different structural supports were made to allow the spaces to communicate, facilitating the passage of natural light, the façade walls were divided and insulated, the installations were renovated, and the exterior carpentry was changed. In addition, a terrace was built, a new bathroom and, in the kitchen, special care was taken to locate the extractor hood motor outside the house to avoid noise during operation.
We made sure that the kitchen was very functional and spacious without taking away from the spaciousness of the living room which, in turn, has a large storage cupboard with handle-less doors in the same color as the walls so that it would not be visually heavy. In this way, the storage needs were resolved, facilitating order in the day area without compromising the useful space available.
The terrace facing the garden was sized to accommodate a small table with chairs without affecting the visibility of the upper dwelling, and finally the lighting and furniture were arranged, combining new elements with others that already existed.
